Suppose you’re visiting the Mugla region of Turkey during your summer holidays. In that case, you should definitely take a day or two out of your regular resort and head to the beautiful coastal town of Akyaka.
Why? Well, because it’s so beautiful!
Akyaka is far less touristy than nearby resorts such as Fethiye, Icmeler, Marmaris, and Dalyan. It’s a chilled-out way of life, a lot more authentic, and offers a break from the norm. Plus, you get to enjoy the freezing cold water of the Azmak River, no matter what the time of year. More on that shortly!

Things To Do In Akyaka
The ‘top’ part of the town is where the ordinary, daily life happens, but if you’re heading down to the beach area, you’ll find a lot more to see and do. If you look to your left as you near the beach, you’ll see kite surfers enjoying their day. If you turn right, you’ll be on the beachfront; if you turn directly left, you’ll be on the Azmak River.
Azmak River
The Azmak River is famous. It’s a fast-flowing, icy cold, extremely clear river that has a moss forest at the bottom.
The river’s environment is also rich in biodiversity, including various fish and plant species, making it a picturesque and tranquil destination for nature enthusiasts and those looking to escape the busier tourist areas.
The trees and vegetation surrounding the river make it look like you’re nowhere near a beach resort. You’ll feel like you’re somewhere else entirely, and it’s a very peaceful spot.
The term “Azmak” in Turkish means “flowing water” or “current,” and it’s often used to describe rivers or streams.
Eat Seafood
The banks of the river are lined with seafood restaurants that are open until late at night. You can also take one of the small boats on a trip down the river, which is a fun way to spend half an hour.
If you’re hot, especially if you’re visiting in July and August, take your shoes off and dip your feet in the icy cold water. It’s the best way to cool off!
Of course, another way to cool off is to head to the beach.
Akyaka Beach
Akyaka Beach is always busy, but it’s also quite wavy, so do bear that in mind. However, the water is shallow, and you can walk out quite a distance before you’re even up to waist height!
The beach is backed by various bars and restaurants, offering sun loungers, refreshments, and meals. These open until late at night, and often live music is on throughout the summer months.
Shop & Drink Tea
If you carry on walking down the beachfront, you’ll enter a forested area where you can enjoy a picnic and check out the view. There is also a small local market that sells trinkets and a coffee/tea shop that allows you to cool down and check out the scenery.
If you walk back from the beach, you’ll also see shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants.
The area around Akyaka is known for its hiking and bird watching, so if that’s your thing, it’s definitely worth staying for a day or two.
You could also take a boat trip from Akyaka and go to the coves around the area; many boat trips only take an hour, but you can opt for a half or full-day trip too. On the main promenade, you’ll see many boat companies offering grips, so just see which one grabs your attention the most.
Kite Surfing In Akyaka
If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping water sport, kite surfing is the perfect activity for you. And Akyaka, Turkey, is one of the best places in the world to give it a try. The strong winds and big waves make it a mecca for kite surfers from all over. But even if you’ve never tried kite surfing before, there’s no need to worry. Plenty of schools in Akyaka can teach you everything you need to know. And once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be able to enjoy this exhilarating sport to the fullest.
Discover The Akyaka’s Architecture
Akyaka is situated on a beautiful gulf and is known for its traditional architecture. The houses in Akyaka are built of wood and stone and have a unique design that is different from the rest of Türkiye. The streets of Akyaka are narrow and winding, and the houses are close together. There are many little shops and cafes lining the streets, which add to the charm of the town. This makes the town seem very intimate and cozy.

Where Is Akyaka
Akyaka is located in Ula, just outside of Gokova, and around 20 minutes away from Marmaris on the Gulf of Gökova. It is a relatively small coastal town that is famous for kitesurfing and the Azmak River.
You’ll notice that the buildings in Akyaka all have a distinct style between them, giving the town a beautiful appearance. The huge, soaring, and extremely green mountain in the background gives way to a large sandy beach, and no matter what the month, it’s usually a little cooler here, thanks to the ever-present wind.
Akyaka is also home to part of the Idyma ruins, which are still being excavated in part.
All around the town, you’ll see lush green trees and fields for what looks like miles. This is a very fertile part of the region, and oranges, lemons, and many other types of local produce are grown here.
However, from a tourist point of view, Akyaka is an excellent, chilled-out spot with some fantastic restaurants, a slightly upmarket feel, and plenty of nature to explore too. Oh, and beach time; there’s always beach time.
The other plus point? The sunsets. They are legendary.
How To Get To Akyaka
You can easily reach Akyaka from Marmaris and Icmeler. The town is only 20-30 minutes away by road, and you can take a taxi, drive, or take a bus.
If you take a taxi, you can expect to pay around 800 liras in return, but this price can change, so check before you plan to travel. If you’re traveling from Icmeler, you can add around 250 liras to this.
If you hire a car, Akyaka is a very easy drive away from Marmaris and Icmeler, and there is literally only one road you can take so that you won’t get lost. The only downside is that the road out of Marmaris is a winding mountain road, albeit it is two lanes.
If you prefer to take the bus, a dolmuş (minibus) leaves Marmaris Otogar regularly throughout the day and returns to Marmaris until early evening.
If you’re traveling from a little further away, perhaps from Fethiye, you will travel first to Mugla, and then Akyaka is signposted just before Marmaris. You can travel by bus to Mugla and then switch to the dolmus to Akyaka. However, these tend to be seasonal.

Beware Of The Mosquitos
There is one thing to remember about visiting Akyaka, no matter what the month of the year – mosquitos. They’re everywhere, especially near the Azmak River. If you are enjoying your seafood meal and it starts to go dark, grab your mosquito spray quickly!
You’ll see them swarming around, and you do not know they are biting you because the fruits of their labor will not start itching until a few hours later!
Despite the mosquitos, Akyaka is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the simple things in life. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there is much to see and do.
